When I Die Euthanize My Pets!
As a partner in a company that is committed to ending the 500,000 pets put in shelters yearly due to the death or disability of the owners, I find it disturbing when people tell me they are planning on having their pets euthanized when they die. What are they thinking? My only guess is they feel no one will care for the pets as they do, but to me this is a sure sign they view the pets as property to be disposed with as they wish.
What is it going to take to get the pet community, owners as well as those in the pet industry, to take responsible action concerning the care for pets for their life, I mean the pet's life? Pets are a responsibility we agree to take on when we invite a pet into our homes, yet are disposable when we feel like it! Recently a story crossed my desk about a car driving down a country road with a dog chasing behind. It seems that the driver of the car was trying to dispose of the dog! A passer by stopped, picked up the dog and now has a wonderful companion. Another story telling the tale of an apartment building in New York which banned Pit Bull dogs, yet a long time resident who had a Pit Bull was allowed to keep the dog in residence. It seems many of the other residents badgered the the owner to such a degree that he took the dog to the vet and had her euthanized then went home and committed sucide.
I know times are tough, but what are we thinking? Where is the compassion, the love, the commitment to everyone having a great life? Like our children our pets were invited into our homes and like our children we have consciously or unconsciously agreed to be responsible for their life. We need to get a grip, act like adults, and take responsible action concerning our pets....have a pet trust. Assure their life after you are gone.
