February is Responsible Pet Owner Month

February is National Responsible Pet Owner Month, so I have decided it is a great month to launch a weekly blog which will interview bloggers, authors, and those in the field providing us with responsible pet care information. as well as provide some great care tips and tidbits.

To launch this new series I have found some great tips for all pet parents!

1.   Have your pet spayed or neutred at a low cost clinic and encourage your friends and family to do the same.  There are more than enought pets available at shelters without adding to the pet population.

Dog training class2.   Train your dog; this is extremely important. The number one reason dogs end up in shelters is behavior problems. By training and socializing your dog you have a happy pet who you can share your home and life with.  There are many great trainers who can help you learn the best training for your dog.  We all want our pets happy and training assures everyone is happy.

3.    Feed your pet a well-balanced and nutritious diet. There are many quality dog and cat food choices on the market today. With a little research you can find a lot of information on food, and the food that would be best for your pet. By feeding a nutritious diet you can boost the immune system, which will help keep your pet healthy and vibrant.

4.     Make sure your pet has up-to-date identification tags on his collar.   Also make sure you have a current city/county license for your dog.

5.     Buy pet insurance.  Do some research and find a plan that fits your needs and budget.  There are many pet insurance companies to choose from.

6.    My particular favorite...Get a PET TRUST!  There are no guarntees any of us will only die of old age!  A pet trust provides for the continued care of your pet(s) should something happen and you could no longer provide the care needed.  That is responsible!
